Grady-Hardy Cemetery needs your Help

May 30, 2003

Grady-Hardy Cemetery is a Pioneer Prairie Cemetery in Monroe county located on 535th Ave, a half mile west and about a half mile north of Melrose, on the west side of the gravel road.  The site has been occationally managed in the past with mowing and burning.  The species present include leadplant, Michigan and wood lily, butterfly milkweed, cream false indigo, purple coneflower, spiderwort, hoary puccoon, alum root, prairie violet, wild petunia, and many others.  It has recently been decided by the pioneer cemetery commissioners to perpetually mow the site, in a 3-2 split decision.  One of the commissioners is being paid by the county to do the mowing, in a seemingly conflict-of-interest.  After the vote, he was out there the next morning at 6AM mowing the site.  Your help is needed to stop this.

Next Meeting of the Commissioners is June 5th 7:00 PM at the Trinity Methodist Church

Rosalie Mullinix is on the Pioneer Cemetery commission and is in favor of saving the prairie.  her email is rosaliem@IowaTelecom.net
