Rock Island and Hanging Bog Preserves Threatened by Highway 100 Bypass

Comment on Highway 100 project

In July approximately ten threatened Byssus skippers were discovered in 2-3 acres of prairie remnants within the proposed Highway 100 corridor near the Rock Island Botanical Preserve in Linn County. Now the Iowa Department of Transportation is proposing to attempt to capture and move the Byssus skippers. According to an expert, this would be wholly unprecedented and highly unlikely to succeed for the
species, which is found in the Midwest only in native prairies. Other issues of significant statewide concern include harm to the Rock Island Preserve; harm to the Cedar River green belt; and project cost (now over $86 million) compared to other budget priorities. Comments on the proposal are due by September 24 to: James Rost, Office of Environmental Services, IDOT, 800 Lincoln Way, Ames, IA 50010.
