Sand Prairie Field Days

Come join us for a tour of some unique and interesting habitats in eastern Iowa and western Illinois.

Itinerary

On Saturday we will be taking a bus to Lost Mound Wildlife Refuge (formerly known as the Savanna Army Depot) .  This 13,000 Acre Complex has about 5000 acres of sand prairie and sand savanna, with an additional 8000 acres of bottomland forests on the Mississippi River.  Additional Lost Mound Resources:

Another site we will be visiting will be the Ayers Sand Prairie, an Illinois Nature Preserve.  Additional Ayers Resources:

Our last stop on Saturday will be the Thompson-Fulton Sand Prairie Preserve.  This is a large sand prairie complex that has different units managed seperately by the Illinois DNR, the Corps of Engineers and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.  Addional Resources on Thompson-Fulton Sand Prairie:

Twenty-year Changes in Burned and Unburned Sand Prairie Remnants in Northwestern Illinois and Implications for Management

 

On Sunday we will be visiting some parabolic sand prairies in western Clinton County.  These parabolic dunes have recently been "discovered" as a new landform in Iowa.  These dunes were created by strong winds at the end of the Wisconin epoch that moved large amounts of sand from the Wapsipinicon River valley and "moved" along the landscape.  Come along and explore this exciting new geologic discovery.  Additional Parabolic Dunes Resources:
